About Mike

Michael Pruett, CISSP has a wide range of cyber-security and network engineering expertise. The plethora of vendors that resell hardware but have zero engineering knowledge resulting in the wrong hardware or configuration being deployed is a major pet peeve of Michael's. This site was started in an effort to spread information while providing the option of quality consulting services at a much lower price than Fortinet Professional Services. Owns PacketLlama.Com (Fortinet Hardware Sales) and Office Of The CISO, LLC (Cybersecurity consulting firm).

Hi, I love FortiGate more and more from the day I’ve chose to buy one to protect our company’s network.
It was probably first thing I’ve decided got promoted to become an IT manager. Before that there was an old PaloAlto PA-200 and I kinda like that after hours, days I hated it trying to figure out how to do some simple changes in configuration but everything changed when I’ve started to understed what and how and managed to do what I’ve planed. There was only one problem:Support expired 5 years ago. I wanted to fix it but they told I can’t just buy support for year or more without paying for the past years. I didn’t like it and after quick calculation I’ve realized that for the same money, maybe little more I can buy new FortiGate 60E with 3 yer support and I did that. I’m really happy for thet because FortiGate is way better in my opinion then PaloAlto(at least old version if its software) because it has everything I need like palo alto and manyso in bothe cases I got what I needed and even more but in a much user friendly and easier to understed way. Learning palo alto was lot harder than fortigate at the beginig and it matters.
Summing up I’m e big fan of FortiGate and probably other Fortinet stuff but it is really pain in the ass in Polad where I live to buy one with support and not go bankrupt. Really. In country where avarage salary is 3-4 times smaller then avarage salary in USA, Germany or UK FortiGate and all Fortinet’s products costs 3-4 times more then in USA and more then 2 times the price is in UK. This is ridiculous and here it is not so unintelligible that many compannies don’t care much and has support expired long ago and smaller companies don’t even look on FortiGate choosing firewall. I know you probably don’t care. Poland is a small market but I’m very sad that I like so much your products because it costs too much here and not sure it is worth it. OK Buying firewall was but really would like to exped the network with fortiswitch and fortiaps and so but have to stick witch cisco or so. I can buy 2 or 3 48-port switches from cisco which can do preaty the same but not in that comfortable way then fortiswitch can which I can get only one for thet money. One 48port FortiSwitch costs here more or less the same I ern workin for 2 whole months and I’me a IT Manager in a mid-size company (less then 100 employees in total). Maybe one day this will change and I hope before I retire 😉
Finally, I just want to thank you for the great job you’ve done already and still do here an on youtube. It’s a pity I’ve already made huge progress in studing FortiGate’s documentation and most of videos is for me like proof thet I’ve done it well but of course not everything and learned few things from it. Can’t wait for next curious what it gona be about. Have a nice day, month, life 😉
